Malta Public Transport (MPT) stated Wednesday that its driver was not at fault in a road traffic incident that occurred in Mosta on 18 June 2026.

The accident left both the bus driver and the driver of a van with serious injuries.

Following an internal investigation that included a review of on-board CCTV footage, MPT confirmed that its driver was operating the vehicle in the correct lane and at the correct speed prior to the collision.

The company noted that the accident could not have been prevented by their driver. MPT expressed its gratitude to the emergency services and authorities for their immediate response, adding that its bus driver remains in stable condition and is continuing to receive medical care.

The company extended its well wishes for a full and speedy recovery to all those affected.

The collision took place at the junction of Triq iż-Żejfa and Triq il-Missjunarji Maltin, involving a bus and an Isuzu van, before the bus ultimately came to a stop after striking a wall.

In addition to the two drivers, both aged 49, who were transported to Mater Dei Hospital with critical injuries, five bus passengers were also taken to the hospital to receive treatment for minor injuries.

Three other vehicles traveling along the same road - a Peugeot 2008, a Mercedes E220D, and a Maruti 800 - sustained damage in the incident, though their drivers were unharmed. The area was closed to traffic to allow for emergency operations and the commencement of an investigation.
