The Public Health Authorities are investigating a foodborne illness outbreak after a group of employees fell ill following a lunch served at their workplace.
The outbreak was identified on Thursday, with 19 people assessed at the Accident and Emergency Department, a statement said.
Two of them required hospital admission, while all those affected received medical care and are reported to be in stable condition.
Following notification of the incident, public health officials launched an epidemiological investigation to establish the source and extent of the outbreak.
At the same time, the Food Safety and Security Authority began an urgent investigation into the food served at the workplace.
This includes the collection and analysis of food and environmental samples to determine the possible source of contamination.
As a precautionary measure, and in line with the Food Safety and Security Act, the authority issued an Emergency Control Order. The kitchen facilities have been closed pending further investigations and the implementation of corrective measures.
The authorities said they are working together to identify the cause of the outbreak and ensure that all necessary measures are taken to reduce any potential risk to public health.
The public was also reminded to follow good food hygiene practices, particularly during hot weather.
Food should be stored, handled, prepared and cooked safely, with attention given to refrigeration temperatures, avoiding cross-contamination between raw and cooked food, and ensuring food products are cooked thoroughly.
Health authorities also thanked healthcare workers, ambulance teams, emergency department staff, laboratory and support staff, public health medics and Food Safety and Security officials for their swift response to the sudden influx of patients and the investigation into the incident.
