Eleven-year-old Jayana Chircop has been awarded the Pope John XXIII Goodness Award 2026 in recognition of her consistent acts of kindness towards a classmate during a ceremony held at San Anton Palace, the Office of the President said in a statement.

The award was presented by President Myriam Spiteri Debono, and is organised annually by the Peace Lab, led by Fr Dionysius Mintoff. It recognises children who regularly demonstrate kindness and compassion towards their peers in everyday life.

Jayana, a student at Rabat Primary School within St Nicholas College, was nominated by her school leadership for the care and support she gives to her classmate, Cataleya Borg.

According to the nomination, Jayana voluntarily and consistently helps Cataleya, ensuring she feels supported, welcomed and fully included in classroom activities. During school events, she also makes a special effort to encourage Cataleya's participation so she can share in the same experiences as her classmates.

The selection panel described Jayana's actions as a clear example of the importance of showing kindness and helping others through the challenges they face.

Addressing those present after presenting the medal, Spiteri Debono said Jayana's genuine acts of kindness should serve as an example not only for children but also for adults, describing them as the foundation for peace between individuals and nations.

"Year after year, this award reminds us that even the smallest gestures can have a profound effect," the President said. She noted that a word of encouragement, a friendly hand, a moment of inclusion or a simple act of support can transform another person's experience in ways that are often greater than people realise.

The President also paid tribute to Fr Dionysius Mintoff, recognising his active work with vulnerable people throughout his 70 years of priesthood, marked by the values of inclusion, solidarity and generosity.

The ceremony was attended by Jayana Chircop and Cataleya Borg, accompanied by their parents and teachers. Also present were Education and Sport Minister Byron Camilleri and Social Policy and Family Minister Michael Falzon, who represented the Prime Minister.
