Health Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg told Parliament on Monday that 998 babies have so far been born via IVF procedures, since these practices were introduced in the country in 2013.

Following a series of parliamentary questions (PQs) posed by PL MP Romilda Zarb on IVF in Malta, the Minister for Health shared updated statistics on Monday.

Borg said that on top of the 998 babies who were born through IVF, another 111 babies are expected to be born, meaning that the total number of procedures from 2013 to date adds up to 1,109 babies once tallied together.

Last year was the most productive year for IVF procedures in the Maltese islands - 181 babies were born and 37 more are still in their mother's womb, as their pregnancy began between October and December. 2024 saw the second-most IVF babies born, with 161 babies.

Health Minister Borg said that since the 2013 introduction of IVF, the number of prospective parents benefitting from these procedures has trended to virtually increase every year. In its first year, IVF procedures observed exactly 100 prospective parents. 2025 featured a new record number of prospective parents through this means for a single calendar year, with 774 prospective parents.

Overall, from 2013 till the end of 2025, a total of 4,757 prospective parents benefitted from IVF procedures.

Budget allocations to fund these procedures were also shared.

In 2013, the 100 prospective parents making use of these services cost the State €75,000. In 2025, the State allocated €6.7 million to fund IVF services. In total terms, the year with the largest IVF budget allocation was 2024, when exactly €7 million was distributed to assist 768 prospective parents.

Since IVF was introduced in the Maltese islands in 2013, the State has allocated €34,307,850 to fund these programmes. This includes the €6.7 million allocated for 2026 as well.
