Police detain 17 individuals who were in Malta irregularly

The Police, together with officers from the Detention Services Agency, carried out a series of inspections in various areas in Marsaskala, where they found 17 individuals that were residing in Malta irregularly.

The inspections were conducted by the police, together with officers from the Detention Services Agency, across various parts of the area.

According to the police, the 17 individuals of Syrian nationality, were taken to a detention centre, where they will remain until the necessary administrative and legal procedures for their return are completed. Authorities said the individuals are to be returned to the country where they have the right to reside.

Police said they will continue carrying out targeted inspections, together with the relevant authorities, in different parts of the country. These operations are aimed at addressing irregular immigration, breaches of labour laws, and the exploitation of vulnerable persons.

The authorities said Malta remains committed to meeting its national and international obligations in this area, while ensuring that laws are enforced with full respect for the fundamental rights of every person.
