Suspension of red card 'wrong decision': Micallef says politics has no space in sport

European Commissioner for Sport Glenn Micallef has criticized the decision to allow American footballer Folarin Balogun to compete in a World Cup match despite receiving a red card, maintaining that political figures should not interfere in sporting matters.

Micallef said that he personally agrees with the widespread belief among fans and former players that the ruling was incorrect. He emphasized that sporting rules and disciplinary decisions must remain the exclusive domain of sports governing bodies.

Micallef warned that intervening in these processes threatens the autonomy of sport, arguing that efforts should instead be directed toward addressing significant governance issues, such as the use of sports for political agendas.

The controversy stems from a match in which Balogun was sent off following a challenge on Bosnia and Herzegovina's Tarik Muharemovic. This incident should have resulted in an automatic one-match suspension for the upcoming round-of-16 game against Belgium. However, FIFA opted to suspend the ban for one year on probation, citing Article 27 of its Disciplinary Code, reportedly following a direct request from U.S. President Donald Trump to FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

The Royal Belgian Football Association expressed shock at the decision, stating that it violates Article 66.4 of the code, which mandates an automatic ban for a red card. As the situation unfolds, Belgium is currently exploring its options ahead of the scheduled match.
