The Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Employment, Jonathan Attard, together with Infrastructure Malta and the Msida Local Council, visited the commencement of works on another project forming part of the Vjal Kulħadd initiative in Oscar Zammit Street, Msida.
This project will see the transformation of approximately 1,600 square metres of road space into a modern pedestrian zone that students, residents and visitors can enjoy.
The works will focus on the lower part of Oscar Zammit Street, directly in front of the Junior College. The project is designed to prioritise pedestrians while retaining parking at both ends of the area to maintain accessibility for the surrounding community.
Minister Jonathan Attard said that the Government is continuing to implement its vision of placing people at the heart of infrastructure investment. “Through the Vjal Kulħadd project, we are seeing the tangible transformation of urban areas into greener, safer and more accessible environments for everyone. This is an investment that combines quality public infrastructure with sustainable environmental solutions, with the aim of improving the quality of life of our communities,” said Minister Attard.
The project will include new green areas, modern public lighting, public Wi-Fi, bicycle stands, benches and paving. Infrastructure works will also be carried out, including new sewer and water mains, as well as a rainwater collection reservoir that will be used for irrigation and the cleaning of the public space.
“In Msida, this project will make a real difference to the daily lives of students, residents and visitors by creating a more modern and inclusive public space. Infrastructure Malta remains committed to delivering infrastructure that not only improves mobility but also enhances people’s quality of life and the environment in which we live,” concluded the Minister.
Infrastructure Malta architect Anton Zammit explained that this is an area frequently used by young people and that there has been a long need for this street to move away from vehicular use and become a pedestrian zone where young people can continue their studies in an informal setting.
The Mayor of Msida, Charles Selvaggi, said that the start of works marks an important step. “After meetings with Infrastructure Malta, we have reached the day when this project has finally begun, for the benefit of all Msida residents and, in particular, students attending the two educational institutions located nearby,” said the Mayor.
This project forms part of Infrastructure Malta’s Vjal Kulħadd programme which is also a manifesto measure. The programme aims to transform urban spaces into safer, more sustainable and more accessible areas. Its strategic location next to the Junior College will provide a safer and more attractive environment for thousands of students and other people who make use of the area daily.
