The sixth edition of the national conference "L-Istat tan-Nazzjon" (The State of the Nation) is set to take place on September 4 at Verdala Palace, centering on the theme "The Maltese population and nation in 50 years' time."
Organised through the initiative of Professor Vincent Marmarà and Lou Bondi, with the support of the Office of the President of Malta, the event aims to foster a serious, evidence-based national discussion regarding the future of the country.
The conference will feature addresses from high-level officials, including Prime Minister Robert Abela, Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, and Leader of the Opposition Alex Borg.
During a press conference at San Anton Palace, President Myriam Spiteri Debono highlighted the vast scope of this year's theme, noting that it encompasses critical areas such as ethnicity, the economy, national infrastructure, health, and education. She encouraged broad public participation, inviting all those interested to contribute to the evolving dialogue.
Lou Bondi, a Strategic Communications Consultant, noted that fundamental shifts are occurring in Maltese society that are challenging traditional understandings of national identity. He explained that the conference is designed to analyze the demographic effects anticipated over the next half-century and to explore how the Maltese identity might evolve from its historical roots of cultural blending.
Professor Marmarà, an expert in statistics at the University of Malta, emphasized that the objective of the conference is not merely to describe current realities but to build a long-term vision for the country. He argued that Malta's future depends on the courage to discuss and act upon challenges before they arise, noting that decisions made today will shape the nation of tomorrow.
