The increasing number of people living with dementia and the increasing need for treatment and care were the main topics discussed during the course: Ethics in Dementia Care, organised by KU Leuven, one of the largest and most renowned universities in Europe, to which CareMalta Group Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Noel Borg, together with Lara Grech, CareMalta Group Operations Manager, attended in Belgium.

The objective of the course, which was held in July 2026, was to foster discussions on foundational, clinical-ethical and organisational-ethical approaches to dementia care.

The course was coordinated by Chris Gastmans, a Professor of Medical Ethics and Head of the Centre for Biomedical Ethics and Law at the Faculty of Medicine, KU Leuven, and analysed key concepts central to dementia care ethics, such as care, the human person, vulnerability, and dignity. It also discussed ethical issues that are central to contemporary debates in dementia care, including dealing with sexual expression, advance care planning, euthanasia and other end-of-life issues.

The course also aimed to introduce participants to a variety of stakeholders' perspectives on ethics in dementia care, including patients, relatives, nurses, physicians, institutional managers, and society at large. It also aimed to establish exchange among national and international experts with respect to ethics in dementia care.

Attending the Ethics in Dementia Care course, together with CareMalta Group's COO and Nursing Manager, were participants from different professional backgrounds, such as healthcare administration, medicine, nursing, psychology, social work, philosophy and theology.
