A 71-year-old cyclist from Kirkop suffered grievous injuries after he was involved in a traffic accident with a car in Luqa on Tuesday morning, a police statement said.

The police were informed at around 9.15am that their assistance was needed in Triq Ħal Qormi, Luqa.

Preliminary investigations found that the accident involved a bicycle ridden by the 71-year-old man and a Mercedes driven by a 24-year-old man from Naxxar, the police said.

The cyclist was treated at the scene by a medical team before being taken by ambulance to Mater Dei Hospital, where he was certified as suffering from grievous injuries, it said.

Police investigations into the accident are ongoing.
