The Aquatic Sports Association Malta (ASA), in collaboration with Bank of Valletta (BOV), has officially launched the BOV Girls Water Polo Academy, a new initiative designed to encourage more girls to take up water polo and strengthen the future of this sport in Malta.
The Academy reflects ASA's commitment to introducing more girls to water polo while creating a clear, inclusive and professionally structured pathway through which they can develop their ability, confidence and ambition. This will be achieved by removing financial and administrative barriers, providing year-round coaching under the guidance of the national team's technical staff, and offering opportunities to compete both locally and internationally.
"The Girls Water Polo Academy represents a significant and long-term investment in the future of women's water polo in Malta," said Karl Izzo, President of the ASA. "We firmly believe that talent must be identified, nurtured and supported from an early age. Our goal is to see these girls progress through the sport, become active members of our clubs and, ultimately, have the opportunity to represent Malta at international level."
During the launch, Ernest Agius, Chief Operations Officer at Bank of Valletta, said, "At the Bank, and through the BOV Foundation, we are committed to creating meaningful opportunities for young people and encouraging wider participation in sport. We are proud to support the BOV Girls Water Polo Academy, because it gives young girls the opportunity to discover their potential, build confidence and pursue their sporting ambitions. Investing in young people today is an investment in the future of our communities." He added that the Academy is a clear example of how it helps more people pursue their sporting ambitions.
Targeting girls aged 9 to 12, the Academy will provide a fun, safe and supportive environment where participants can develop their skills and passion for water polo. Sessions will be led by qualified coaches under the guidance of Head Coach Aurélien Cousin, assisted by Anthony Farrugia, who are also the Head and Assistant Coaches of the Women's National Teams.
As part of a broader programme to increase participation in water polo among young girls across Malta, the initiative will include ten free outreach sessions in schools, introducing the sport to new audiences and helping identify emerging talent. With Malta currently facing a shortage of female water polo players, the Academy is specifically designed to help strengthen the talent pipeline and encourage more girls to pursue the sport. Participants who demonstrate commitment and potential will be invited to join the Academy, where they will benefit from free training sessions twice a week throughout the year, regardless of whether they are registered with a local club. The programme follows a structured four-year development pathway, offering opportunities to compete in local leagues and international tournaments.
