In response to the severe heatwave experienced in July, and the resulting pressure on the national energy infrastructure, Lidl Malta has announced a proactive, one-month initiative to curb its electricity consumption. Starting Monday 27 July 2026, the discount supermarket leader will reduce internal lighting levels by 25 per cent across its entire retail network in Malta and Gozo.
The measure aims to proactively lower the company's electricity consumption during peak demand hours, doing its part to support grid stability while helping alleviate pressure on the local energy network.
"As an integral part of the Maltese community, we recognise the severe challenges households, local businesses, and national infrastructure are facing due to these extreme weather conditions," said Owen Micallef, Lidl Malta Director. "Reducing our store lighting by a quarter is a practical, immediate step we can take to lower grid demand. It reflects our core values of social responsibility, resource efficiency, and active community support when the island needs it most."
The 25 per cent lighting reduction will apply to customer shopping floors, aisles, and back-of-house logistics facilities across all 12 Lidl outlets. The company confirmed that the adjustment will be implemented seamlessly, maintaining high standards of customer safety, product visibility, and store operations throughout the period.
This initiative builds on Lidl Malta's existing long-term environmental commitments. As an ISO 50001 Energy Management certified company, the retailer already operates high-efficiency LED illumination systems and intelligent climate controls across its estate as part of its ongoing drive to minimise its operational carbon footprint.
