The Government has established an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Governance Council to oversee the coordinated and responsible adoption of AI across the Public Administration.

In a statement by the Office of the Principal Permanent Secretary, it said that the new council aims to ensure that AI technologies are implemented in a way that enhances the design and delivery of public services while generating tangible value for citizens.

The council will be chaired by the Government's Chief AI Officer and will be supported by the Artificial Intelligence Governance Unit. It will provide central strategic oversight of AI initiatives across Government, bringing together key stakeholders to promote a unified approach to AI governance.

Among its key responsibilities, the council will help ensure compliance with the European Union's AI Act while reducing fragmented or duplicative AI projects across the Public Administration. The initiative is intended to strengthen coordination, encourage responsible innovation and support the effective use of AI in Government operations.

According to the Office of the Principal Permanent Secretary, the establishment of the council reflects Government's commitment to harnessing the benefits of artificial intelligence while maintaining appropriate governance and oversight.
