A centenary in operation invites reflection. Yet for a family business, the more important question is not simply what has been achieved, but what each generation has chosen to carry forward.
Across four generations, United Group has changed considerably. What began in transport and mobility developed into tourism services, vehicle rental and leasing, automotive operations, property development and investment. New sectors were entered, partnerships were formed and opportunities were pursued as Malta's economy evolved.
Continuity, however, has never meant leaving the business unchanged.
More Than Passing on the Baton
For the Gatt Baldacchino family, each generation has inherited both the achievements of those before it and the responsibility to strengthen them. The task has not been simply to preserve an existing organisation, but to ensure that it remains relevant, resilient and prepared for the future.
This has required a careful balance between respecting the Group's history and remaining open to change. Established ways of working must be evaluated in the context of new technologies, changing markets and emerging opportunities. New ideas are encouraged, but always considered within the context of the Group's long-term direction and responsibilities.
In this sense, legacy is not treated as entitlement. It is understood as an obligation to make considered decisions and to leave the business in a stronger position for the next generation.
Accountability in Practice
That responsibility can be seen in several of the Group's defining decisions.
Its longstanding relationship with Hertz reflects the importance placed on consistency, trust and shared standards. Maintained across decades, the partnership has remained part of the Group's mobility activities as both Malta's tourism sector and customer expectations have evolved.
The development of Motors Inc. similarly demonstrates an approach based on building long-term capabilities through strategically aligned partnerships. Rather than viewing the automotive sector as a static area of business, United Group continues to consider how technology, customer needs and wider changes in mobility will shape its future.
In property, the commitment behind Pendergardens, as case in point, required patience, confidence and a willingness to invest over the long term. The development was more than a commercial opportunity. It was a decision whose impact would extend beyond the immediate interests of the Group and contribute to Malta's wider residential and commercial landscape.
The eventual expansion into Austria introduced a new dimension to the Group's property portfolio. Entering an international market required careful evaluation of risk, opportunity and strategic relevance. It also reflected the belief that experience built in Malta could be applied and further developed beyond the islands.
These decisions differ in scale and sector, but they are connected by a common expectation: that growth should be considered not only in terms of immediate and monetary return, but also in relation to reputation, relationships and future responsibility.
Accountability shapes how United Group evaluates opportunities, chooses its partners and protects the reputation built over generations. Decisions are made with an understanding that their impact may extend well beyond the current leadership.
The Group's relationships with employees, customers, suppliers, international principals and business partners, have continued over decades, built through consistency and mutual trust.
Building for Those Who Follow
As United Group now enters its second century, the decisions ahead will be different from those made in the past. Markets will continue to evolve, new technologies will emerge and further opportunities will arise in Malta and internationally.
The responsibility, however, remains consistent: to build on what has been entrusted, adapt with purpose and ensure that the next generations inherit not simply a legacy, but a stronger foundation from which to move forward.
