Members of Malta's Ukrainian community were joined by Maltese supporters, diplomats and representatives of the international community for a solidarity walk marking the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's restored independence, the Foundation for the Ukrainian Community of Malta said in a statement.
The event, held on Monday evening, formed part of Independence Day activities taking place across dozens of countries and hundreds of cities worldwide.
Organised by the Foundation for the Ukrainian Community of Malta, the walk brought together members of the Ukrainian community, Maltese friends of Ukraine, representatives of the international community and diplomatic missions, including representatives of the embassies of Poland, Ireland and France.
The event was an opportunity to honour those defending Ukraine, reaffirm solidarity with the Ukrainian people and draw attention to the fact that Ukraine's struggle for freedom and independence continues, the statement said.
While Ukraine celebrates 35 years since the restoration of its independence in 1991, its history as a nation and its struggle for freedom reach back centuries.
Ukrainians have repeatedly fought to preserve their language, culture and identity and to determine their own future, despite attempts by empires and occupying powers to suppress them and erase their history.
Today, Ukraine's independence is once again being defended at the cost of human lives. Ukrainians are fighting not only for their territory, but for the right to live freely, preserve their culture, build a democratic society and determine their own future, the Foundation said.
The 35th anniversary is being marked this year through a global campaign of gratitude to those who have supported Ukraine throughout Russia's full-scale war.
Ukrainians around the world are expressing their appreciation to countries, communities and individuals who have provided humanitarian, financial, military and other forms of support, raised awareness about the ongoing war and continue to stand with Ukraine.
"We are deeply grateful to everyone who has stood with Ukraine and continues to support our people," the Foundation for the Ukrainian Community of Malta said.
"Every form of support matters - whether it is humanitarian assistance, political solidarity, financial or practical help, or simply speaking up for Ukraine. It reminds us that we are not alone in this struggle."
The Foundation also expressed its particular gratitude to Malta and the Maltese people for their solidarity and support, and for providing a safe temporary home for many Ukrainians forced to leave their country because of the war.
The organisers thanked all Maltese friends of Ukraine, representatives of the international community, diplomatic missions, volunteers, civil society organisations and everyone who joined the march or supported the Ukrainian community with their presence and their voice.
