Labour MEP Thomas Bajada has launched an initiative providing the public with access to free drinking water in Żurrieq.

This initiative forms part of Bajada's ongoing work in this field, following his leadership on the Water Resilience Strategy within the European Parliament, through which, Bajada reinforced the principle that access to water should not be viewed as a privilege, but as a right belonging to the people, a PL statement said.

He believes that this right cannot remain merely written in a strategy or European document but must reach the people and be felt within their communities.

Bajada noted that this initiative in Żurrieq offers a small yet tangible example of how the right to access water can become a reality in everyday life.

Funded by the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, this initiative is open to everyone including passers-by, whole families and the elderly.

This has also been made possible through the Water Services Corporation's continuous investment in ensuring a supply of safe, potable water.

Bajada added that while the right to water belongs to everyone, we are simultaneously encouraging more people to use reusable bottles, thereby reducing daily plastic consumption.

He also thanked Mayor Rita Grima and the Żurrieq Local Council for agreeing to participate in this initiative, noting that together they are bringing this right closer to the public.

Bajada also invited other local councils across Malta and Gozo to contact him so that similar spaces, where everyone enjoys the right to free access to water, can be created in their localities.

He concluded by calling for this right to be extended to more localities, in keeping with the very spirit of Kull Qatra Tgħodd campaign, which focuses on the fact that water belongs to us all, and access to it is a right shared by all because every drop truly counts.
