Home Affairs Minister Glenn Bedingfield has stated that a written request for the extradition of Mohammed Al Musrati, commonly known as "Lilu King," was received from Libya by the Maltese government earlier this September.

Minister Bedingfield shared a video clip of him divulging this information with the media on Monday morning, through his Facebook page.

Lilu King's potential deportation has been a topic of discussion between Maltese and Libyan authorities since at least May this year. He was stripped of his refugee status in September.

The Home Affairs Minister said that he discussed Lilu King's extradition with the Attorney General of the Libyan government in Tripoli, during his ministerial visit in September a few weeks ago. The Libyan government wants Lilu King to face justice in its own courts.

Minister Bedingfield said that while the Maltese government evaluates every such request it receives, he made clear with the Libyan Attorney General that, with respect to Maltese laws and the European Convention for Human Rights, the Maltese government requires certain "guarantees" before it can make a decision in this regard.

Lilu King faces several charges in his home country of Libya, including drug trafficking and homicide.

Bedingfield added that Lilu King is the only Libyan citizen in the Maltese islands who has an extradition request made against him by the Libyan state.
