An 18-year-old woman has died in hospital days after she was injured in a traffic accident in Qormi earlier this month, police said in a statement.

The accident took place at around 8.15pm on 21 August in Triq Tal-Bajjada, Qormi.

Police went to the scene, where preliminary investigations found that a 20-year-old man from Birkirkara had lost control of a Renault Clio and crashed into a barrier.

The 18-year-old woman, who was from Paola, was a passenger in the vehicle. She was later identified as Kelly Caruana.

The two were assisted by a medical team and taken by ambulance to Mater Dei Hospital.

Police said the woman's condition unfortunately deteriorated a few days later, and she was certified dead late on Saturday evening.

In a Facebook post, Fondazzjoni Nazareth identified the 18-year-old woman as Kelly, the daughter of one of the foundation's care workers.

In a tribute, the foundation said its community was deeply saddened by Kelly's death, describing her as a "beautiful girl" whose gentle and sweet character, kind heart and "beautiful and contagious smile" touched everyone fortunate enough to know her.

It said Kelly's smile could "light up an entire room," while her personality had left a lasting mark on those who knew her.

"Although her life was far too short, the beautiful memories she left behind will remain forever in the hearts of those who loved and knew her," the foundation said.

Fondazzjoni Nazareth extended its condolences to Kelly's family, particularly her parents and loved ones, and prayed that they would find strength, comfort and peace during this difficult time.

It also called on the public to remember Kelly and her family in their prayers.

"May her beautiful smile continue to shine forever in the hearts of all those who were fortunate enough to know her. Rest in peace, dear Kelly," the foundation said.

Magistrate Joe Mifsud was informed of the case and appointed an inquiry.

Police investigations into the accident are ongoing.
