Applications are now open for the China Cultural Centre in Malta's 2026-2027 Chinese language courses. The courses offer learners the opportunity to discover a language spoken by more than a billion people and the culture and ways of thinking embedded within it.

Starting on Tuesday, 6 October, the courses will welcome both beginners taking their first steps in Chinese and more advanced learners wishing to develop their existing skills. Classes will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 6 to 7.30pm at the China Cultural Centre, 173 Melita Street, Valletta.

Chinese is one of the world's most widely spoken languages and has an increasingly visible place in international business, tourism, education, diplomacy and cultural exchange. Yet learning Chinese offers something beyond its practical value. It opens a window onto one of the world's oldest continuous civilisations and introduces learners to a language built around sounds, tones and a writing system markedly different from European languages.

For Maltese learners, this difference can be part of the attraction. Learning to recognise and write Chinese characters, understanding how tones can change meaning, and gradually being able to communicate in a language that may initially appear unfamiliar can make the learning process both challenging and rewarding.

The courses at the China Cultural Centre combine language learning with insights into Chinese culture, allowing students to understand not only how something is said, but also the cultural context behind it. Lessons are led by experienced instructors in an interactive environment designed to encourage participation and practical communication.

At a time when communication increasingly crosses national and cultural boundaries, learning another language can also mean learning to see the world from another perspective. Chinese provides learners in Malta with a direct connection to the people, traditions and contemporary life of a country whose cultural and economic links with the rest of the world continue to grow.

No previous knowledge of Chinese is required for the beginners' course.
