Public transport passenger journeys rise to 234,673 a day in first half of 2026

An average of 234,673 passenger journeys were recorded on Malta Public Transport services each day during the first six months of 2026, according to figures tabled in Parliament.

The figure is the highest average daily number recorded in the figures provided, surpassing the 227,245 daily average recorded in 2025.

The figures were tabled by Minister for Sustainable Mobility Chris Bonett in response to a parliamentary question by MP Ivan Castillo.

They show that the average number of daily passenger journeys has increased steadily since 2020, when the figure stood at 92,539.

In 2019, Malta Public Transport recorded an average of 157,286 passenger journeys per day.

The daily average then rose to 96,458 in 2021, 134,856 in 2022, 184,224 in 2023 and 207,598 in 2024.

The 2026 figure represents an increase of around 3.3% over the 2025 daily average and is around 49% higher than the 2019 figure.

The figures refer to the average number of passenger journeys per day and cover January to June 2026 for the current year.
