Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg said that Malta's maritime sector has significant untapped potential, calling for greater investment in infrastructure, cleaner fuels and a long-term strategy to strengthen the industry's competitiveness.

Borg was speaking during a meeting with the Malta Maritime Forum at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition in Valletta, as part of a series of meetings with social partners ahead of Budget 2027.

He said the Nationalist Party recognised the strategic importance of the maritime sector and stressed the need for ambitious investment, modern infrastructure and clear direction.

Borg noted that the party and the Forum agreed on several priorities, including safeguarding the industry's competitiveness and providing greater certainty for those working and investing in the sector.

He also highlighted opportunities in bunkering and the development of infrastructure needed to supply cleaner fuels to vessels.

During the meeting, Malta Maritime Forum representative Godwin Xerri raised concerns about international instability and its impact on the maritime industry, particularly following the attack on the vessel Chelsea 3 in the Black Sea.

The Forum also highlighted the impact of the European Union's Emissions Trading System (ETS) on the competitiveness of Maltese ports. It argued that environmental protection should be pursued without disadvantaging Malta because of its geographical realities and reliance on maritime transport.

Another proposal put forward by the Forum was the establishment of a single maritime authority with clearly defined responsibilities. It also called for cooperation between the two main political parties to ensure that strategic decisions affecting the sector are guided by a shared long-term vision.

The need for greater investment in maritime education and training was also discussed, including training for seafarers and professionals in related fields such as economics, law and business management.

Borg was accompanied by Shadow Minister for Finance Adrian Delia, Shadow Minister for Sustainable Mobility Ivan Castillo and Shadow Minister for the Economy, Technology and Strategic Projects Darren Carabott.
