Students and educators at Xgħajra Primary School, part of St Margaret College, celebrated the official opening of brand new outdoor facilities following a major investment aimed at revitalizing and modernizing the school grounds.
The upgraded spaces were inaugurated by Minister Byron Camilleri alongside School Head Valerie Caruana and students. The project transformed an area that had previously fallen into disrepair into a modern, safe, and fully equipped environment for physical activity, hands-on learning, and recreation.
Among the new sports facilities is a multi-purpose court suitable for basketball, volleyball, and tennis, alongside an artificial turf pitch for football and a dedicated running track. To promote road safety, the school grounds now feature a cycling track complete with traffic signs and pedestrian crossings so children can learn safety rules in a controlled environment. Ground games, including traditional Maltese games, have also been integrated into the play areas to encourage physical movement and social interaction.
The project also places a strong emphasis on outdoor learning and nature. Students now have access to an outdoor reading area, a picnic section for creative lessons, a herb garden, and an educational pond built with traditional Maltese architectural features to teach children about biodiversity and environmental responsibility. An open-air theatre was also constructed for student performances, cultural events, and community gatherings.
In addition to new amenities, extensive work was carried out to make the school safer and more structurally sound. This included rebuilding boundary walls, leveling the ground, installing new rainwater drainage systems, upgrading the school entrance, and restoring the surrounding facades. Environmental conservation was also respected, with a native Sandarac Gum tree preserved and seamlessly integrated into the new design.
Speaking during the inauguration, Minister Camilleri stated that quality education means creating safe, modern spaces where children can grow, play, and reach their full potential both inside and outside the classroom. School Head Valerie Caruana expressed her delight at the new courtyard, noting that the community is eager to see students enjoy these dynamic new areas.
The project was carried out through the EDU Infrastructure Programme. Further improvements are being planned for the school in the future, including electrical upgrades to support air conditioning and solar panels, as well as potential facility expansions.
