Home Affairs Minister Glenn Bedingfield said that if the Nationalist Party, with Alex Borg at the helm, was in government, it would have "probably" not implemented any of its electoral pledges.
Minister Bedingfield said these remarks during a Labour Party press conference on Budget 2027 on Tuesday. He was joined by government MP Rebecca Buttigieg.
After listing several measures that were announced in this year's budget, such as the continuation of all existing government schemes, pensions increasing for a twelfth successive year, and the Super Bonus, the Minister for Home Affairs said that in contrast, a PN government would have probably failed to announce any of its electoral promises in the same way the Labour Party has.
"We would have seen a totally different picture under a PN government on Monday evening," Bedingfield said, adding that a PN government would have announced that nothing it promised can yet be delivered.
He said that as past PN governments implemented austerity measures in the face of global financial challenges, in his view, the PN has not changed in this regard, "and that's how they always will be."
"They would have warned that, because of the 'stormy' international situation, they cannot fulfil what they pledged," he said.
Bedingfield criticised the fact that Opposition Leader Alex Borg "could not give the Budget a rating" and condemned Borg's comments that he will vote against the Budget.
The Home Affairs Minister said that voting against Budget 2027 would mean voting against all the measures set out to bolster the Maltese islands for all Maltese and Gozitans, such as the Super Bonus and pension increases.
While speaking about measures announced in Monday's Budget, Minister Bedingfield said that "this Budget will continue adding money in people's pockets" and that the government will continue providing all the necessary support to back up the country's most crucial sectors.
He added that through Budget 2027, strategic decisions are being taken "to help Maltese and Gozitans, and for foreigners visiting our country to contribute more."
He said that Budget 2027 cost nearly €11 billion in total - making it 10% larger than last year's Budget.
Labour MP Rebecca Buttigieg said that Budget 2027 will keep providing stability for all Maltese and Gozitans to progress in life.
She said that all people deserve to be able to plan their futures with more confidence in a country that grants them better opportunities and supports them at every step of the way.
Buttigieg said that through Budget 2027's measures, a couple earning up to €60,000 between them with two children will retain an additional €6,500 in their pockets, with room to grow given potential additional measures and grants.
Malta's economic resilience and energy subsidies were also mentioned, by both Bedingfield and Buttigieg respectively.
Buttigieg said that investments to improve people's quality of life will come into effect to truly improve their wellbeing.
"We are committed to improve wellbeing by 25% for all Maltese and Gozitans over the legislature. There is no wellbeing if you don't invest in the people, like we are," she said.
She said that the PL government has presented "a very strong budget," dismissing narratives that the Labour Party is only good at drawing up Budgets on the eve of an election.
Buttigieg concluded that Malta will continue being a success story where challenges are overcome and turned into opportunities for all.
