"You all deserve to be blown up!" a 49-year-old man told the court during his arraignment on Tuesday.
"You've neglected serious cases, yet you're nit-picking over mine. You should be ashamed of yourselves," he shouted.
The man eventually had to be escorted out of the courtroom more than once on Tuesday after shouting more insults and threats at the magistrate, police officers, his legal aid lawyer and journalists.
David Bonnici, from Żebbuġ, was brought before Magistrate Ingrid Bianco to face six charges, including domestic violence, harassment, and threats.
Bonnici initially appeared calm when he entered Courtroom 14, informing the magistrate that he did not want a lawyer and wished to represent himself.
However, Magistrate Bianco informed him that he had to be legally represented and appointed Axel Camilleri as his legal aid lawyer.
When Camilleri attempted to speak to him privately before the hearing could begin, Bonnici became increasingly agitated, insisting that he should not be imprisoned over allegations made by his father, whom he repeatedly described as corrupt.
"You're sending someone to prison based on the word of a corrupt man like my father," he shouted.
During the outburst, Bonnici claimed that he had a podcast through which he promoted the message of a group he belonged to, aimed at improving Malta.
He went on to criticise the police for pursuing the case against him, accusing them of neglecting more serious investigations while focusing on minor details in his own case.
"You've neglected serious cases, yet you're nit-picking over mine. You should be ashamed of yourselves," he shouted.
At one point, he turned towards a police inspector and remarked, "You're a man too" (Raġel ukoll int).
As officers attempted to escort him outside, Bonnici continued shouting and warned that he would not hesitate to push one of them.
The disturbance continued outside the courtroom, where he could be heard shouting and banging while accompanied by his lawyer.
When he was brought back into the courtroom, Bonnici's behaviour escalated further as he directed threatening remarks towards those present, including the magistrate, police officers and members of the media.
"You all deserve to be blown up" he shouted.
Turning towards journalists covering the proceedings, he warned them to report what was happening accurately, adding that he had had enough of them.
Bonnici repeatedly shouted, "You should be ashamed of yourselves," despite attempts to restore order.
At one stage, Magistrate Bianco banged on her desk in an attempt to restore order. Bonnici responded by imitating her actions before bursting into laughter.
"OK, OK, don't beat me," he remarked.
The magistrate once again ordered that he be removed from the courtroom, with police officers and court security personnel escorting him outside.
Following the repeated interruptions, shouting and threatening remarks, the hearing was suspended, while Magistrate Bianco ordered the Commissioner of Police to investigate Bonnici's conduct during the sitting.
