A ‘go back to your country’ budget, Aditus says

Malta Budget 2027 is a shocking testament to the institutionalised racism that for years has directed Malta's treatment of non-nationals living here, NGO aditus said Tuesday. It arrogantly ignores the thousands of people who have made Malta their homes, it added in a statement.

Instead, Malta Budget 2027 is a misguided response to critique of Government's own lack of long-term socio-economic vision placing populism and greed at its heart. What the nation heard yesterday is a direct affront to Malta's own vision on migrant integration and social cohesion, the NGO said.

In 2025, Government adopted an Integration Strategy with the aim "to create an inclusive and cohesive society in Malta, where diversity is celebrated, and every individual, regardless of background, can fully participate, contribute meaningfully, and thrive."

Clearly, Malta Budget 2027 is ignoring Government's own policy direction, rubbishing decades of consultations, research, investment and positive energy. It is indeed a terrible pity to see Government dismantle its own achievements and regress with such sleight of hand.

"We have repeatedly underlined that the broader concerns Government claims these measures are intended to address were not created or fuelled by migrants. Ironically, we all know why Malta is in the state it is: record-level corruption crippling our health sector, an unscrupulous construction industry, lists of direct orders for phantom services, persistent ignoring of community concerns and complaints, centralisation of power in the hands of the chosen elite, business interests directing policy and legislation."

We also question the legality of the announced measures, aditus said. International and EU law require Malta to treat all persons with dignity, including people who are in Malta to work, study or because they have had to flee their homes.

By potentially directly placing thousands of men, women and children in a situation of precariarity, Malta Budget 2027 is not only morally questionable but possibly also in violation of a series of important legal norms.

It is extremely sad that instead of taking bold measures to tackle these institutional disasters, Government is picking on the easiest target with one clear message: "if you don't like it, go back to your country!"

aditus foundation expressed its profound solidarity with everyone affected by these vile measures. We want to let you know that you are welcome and that we will stand with you to secure your dignity and humanity.
