Enemalta has issued two major tenders with a combined value of almost €11 million for the supply and installation of new cables in Gozo, marking another important step in strengthening the island's electricity distribution network.
The investment will facilitate the creation of a more robust and reliable electricity network, improving the distribution of electricity across Gozo and providing additional capacity to meet future demand, a statement said.
The larger tender, valued at approximately €7 million, covers trenching works and the laying of new 33kV underground cables linking the 132kV Distribution Centre with the distribution centres in Xewkija and Qala, as well as the new distribution centre in Kerċem.
A second tender, with an estimated value of €4 million, covers the supply and delivery of 33kV underground electricity cables required for the network reinforcement project.
Enemalta Executive Chairman Ryan Fava said that Gozo remains a priority in its investment programme and these tenders reflect the importance placed on upgrading the island's electricity infrastructure as part of its long-term strategy for the Maltese Islands.
The project involves the supply of new cables and their installation in three phases, covering Għajnsielem, Xewkija and the Xewkija-Victoria area. The works will also incorporate measures to minimise disruption to residents and traffic, control noise and dust, and ensure proper road reinstatement.
Together, the two tenders represent a significant investment in Gozo's electricity infrastructure, creating stronger connections between key distribution centres and supporting a more resilient network.
The project forms part of Enemalta's wider programme of investment in the electricity distribution system, aimed at strengthening supply reliability, modernising infrastructure and ensuring the network can respond to the needs of households and businesses.
