Errors in prosecution can deny victims justice and result in individuals facing legal proceedings that should never have been brought against them, the Nationalist Party said on Thursday, expressing serious concern over a sentencing calculation error by the Office of the Attorney General.

In a statement, Shadow Minister for Justice, Research and Innovation Joe Giglio said the PN was seriously concerned about the court's observations regarding an error in calculating the sentence requested by the Attorney General's Office.

The party said the case once again raised concerns about shortcomings in prosecution that had come to light over recent years.

It said such errors could have serious consequences for those involved, including depriving victims of justice and causing individuals to face proceedings that should never have been initiated against them.

The PN called for concrete measures to prevent similar shortcomings from occurring in the future.

It said every person had the right to properly conducted prosecution proceedings and a fair trial, while victims deserved full justice.
