60 Second Interview - Liz Yates

Liz was involved in theatre in the UK from an early age studying ballet at The Patricia Rouse School of Dance, Plymouth and as a member of the Theatre Royal Plymouth Youth Theatre. She went on to study Drama at The University of Wales, Aberystwyth and Bretton Hall, Leeds. She has worked as a director, teacher and performer both in the UK, including work at The Edinburgh Fringe, and abroad. She began her professional career as a director of Youth Theatre at The Redgrave Theatre in Surrey. She has worked on a variety of projects in a freelance capacity including at The Chichester Festival Theatre, The National Association of Youth Theatre Festival and The Henley Festival, Henley on Thames. In 2000 she was commissioned to devise a show for the Pentecost 2000 Festival in Cheltenham and in 2001 worked as acting coach for Good Company’s UK tour of Strange Kind of Hero. As a director, credits include: Blood Wedding (UK and Spain), Agamemnon and The Trial (Norden Farm Centre for the Arts, Maidenhead), and The Crossing Path (Ustinov Studio, Bath).

n How old are you? Star sign and date of birth?

35. Capricorn. Christmas Day!

n What would you like to be doing in 10 years’ time?

Living in a nice big house. My daughter will be happily settled at secondary school and I’ll be comfortable enough to pick and choose jobs.

n What is your idea of perfect happiness?

A healthy happy family who laugh a lot.

n What is your favourite

occupation?

Pampering myself.

n What is your greatest fear?

Bad press!

n What is it that you most value in your friends?

Laughter and helping me solve problems.

n How would you like to die?

Eating chocolate spread.

n What is your greatest extravagance?

My wedding! It’s amazing how quickly you spend money on such a big event. It’s a special day so everything needs to be just right.

n What is your greatest regret?

Not being an Olympic gymnast.

n What is your most treasured possession?

My Pointe shoes. I still have my first pair. I remember putting them on with my

grandmother.

n Which talent would you most like to have apart from the ones you already have?

Painting. I always admire an artist’s ability to capture a moment on canvas.

n What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?

Losing someone close.

n Where would you like to live?

Somewhere with a good view and not far from water.

n What is your most marked characteristic?

Flair!

n Who are your heroes/heroines in real life?

I have been inspired by many people. I do admire Darcy Bussell, principal dancer at the Royal Ballet, for what she has achieved.

n What is it that you most dislike?

People with no manners or consideration for others.

n What is your motto?

“Live life, love much.”
