Court: Malta Shipyards Employees file judicial protest over asbestos jointing sheets

Malta Independent Tuesday, 6 March 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

A total of 111 Malta Shipyards employees yesterday filed a judicial protest against their employer and a supplier, claiming they had not been informed that the jointing sheets they were working with contained asbestos, which is detrimental to their health.

The employees filed their judicial protest against Malta Shipyards and Inter-Power Limited and brothers Edward and Keith Micallef St John.

Last week, Malta Shipyards filed a judicial protest against Inter-Power Ltd, claiming the company supplied them with jointing sheets that contained traces of asbestos.

The employees complained that although they had asked for information, even through a letter sent to management, the management did not inform them that the jointing sheets contained traces of asbestos.

They said the management was duty-bound to inform them about this.

The employees held the Malta Shipyards management, Inter-Power Limited, as well as Edward and Keith Micallef St John responsible for any damages they may sustain.

Dr Steven Farrugia Sacco signed the writ.
