Malta Independent Friday, 12 October 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

The Caravaggio and Paintings of Realism exhibition, organised by the St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation, was inaugurated by President Eddie Fenech Adami to mark the 400th anniversary of the artist’s arrival in Malta

The exhibition, at St John’s Co-Cathedral, was set up to help trace Caravaggio’s stay in Malta, the works he produced and the impact he left on the Maltese artistic scene.

The Exhibition and Co-Cathedral’s curator, Cynthia De Giorgio, told this newspaper that scholars attending a symposium tomorrow were all renowned art historians.

One of the scholars attending will be Helen Langdon, a British university lecturer who has published books and who has also written a book on the life of Caravaggio.

Two other scholars include Dr Sergio Beneditti, who is a curator of the Fine Arts Museum in Dublin, and Professor John Gash who is a professor from Delaware University and a principal figure in the field of Baroque. He has also published several pieces on Caravaggio and is currently engaged on a book on Caravaggio’s followers entitled Caravaggism.

Professor John Spike will also be attending the symposium.

This exhibition will remain open until 16 December every day from 9.30am to 4.30pm including Sundays. On Saturdays the exhibition will remain open until 6pm.
