Setting A good waste management example

Malta Independent Saturday, 27 October 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

WasteServ Malta Ltd, in its continuous efforts to minimise inconveniences to the residents of Xaghra and Gozo, has been carrying out an intensive washing process of every truck that goes in and out of the Qortin temporary waste transfer station, which is acting as a temporary waste transfer station between Gozo and Malta.

The remains of waste inside the trucks cause foul smells when they accumulate for days on end. WasteServ, therefore, has introduced the practice of washing by high pressure water system inside and outside the truck after every trip. Those waste carriers who object to this cleansing practice are refused permission to make use of the facility managed by WasteServ.

This initiative is just one of the many that are being set up, and highlight Gozo as an example of excellence in waste management. Similar washing measures are to be introduced also at the Ghallis Engineered Landfill in Malta.

The closed Qortin landfill in Gozo is currently being utilized as a temporary waste transfer station, where from there, non-inert and non-hazardous waste originating from Gozo and Comino is transported to the Ghallis Engineered Landfill or waste recyclers in Malta.

Simultaneously, the site is being rehabilitated for future use as a family recreational park, details of which were announced earlier this month by the Ministry for Rural Affairs and the Environment and WasteServ. When the waste transfer facility is developed at Tal-Kus, all these activities shall be transferred to the new facility and will be done indoors, where the air of the building shall be treated before released into the atmosphere to ensure better surrounding environment.
