Ruth Bacmeister Exhibition

Malta Independent Sunday, 2 December 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Ruth E. Bacmeister who was born in England in 1934 is exhibiting in the foyer of St Patrick’s Don Bosco Street, Sliema throughout this month. The exhibition is in aid of the boys of St Patrick’s Salesian School.

The artist trained in painting at Canterbury College of Art; now being retired from full-time teaching of art (in secondary education), there is time to paint. She is still doing some tutoring of adults for the Creative Arts Retreat Movement - this organisation arranges Painting and Prayer retreats in the UK and sometimes in France, Spain and Italy and also has had them in Malta. She has been visiting Malta in the spring for several years, particularly enjoying the colour and the light.

She enjoys working in acrylics and also pastels and etching, often on a small scale. Ruth is particularly interested in tone and colour and so enjoys the strong light and rich colours of Malta. She has found a camera with a zoom lens a useful tool, almost an alternative to a sketchbook, though it sometimes takes three or more photographs to provide the information for one painting.

Main gallery link has been with the Melitensia Art Gallery in Malta. Also exhibits with the Farnham Art Society and the Haslemere Art Society, which are local art societies in the UK. Ruth is a member of the British National Acrylic Painters’ Association and has had awards at their exhibitions. She has had a painting in the Royal Academy summer exhibition and has also exhibited with the Society of Women Artists in London.
