AD Councillor resigns, saying party wants power at all costs

Malta Independent Thursday, 14 February 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Alternattiva Demokratika Swieqi councillor Rene Rossignaud yesterday resigned his position from the council and from an AD party member because he is “no longer in agreement with the way AD is being led”.

In a letter sent to AD chairman Harry Vassallo, Mr Rossignaud said he had joined AD because he believed it could work in favour of certain principles.

He said he had obtained a good result in the Swieqi local council election, but now that “a general election is approaching, I think that AD has changed its strategy. It has become a party that is only interested in obtaining some form of power at all costs, endangering the same principles that AD believes in. I cannot continue to work within AD when it has become only an instrument to attack Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and the Nationalist Party, without understanding the consequences that this strategy could bring on the country”.

Mr Rossignaud said he was resigning because AD was no longer a party that works to convince people with its principles, but works to obtain votes from another party, particularly from the Nationalist Party. “I have nothing against AD increasing the number of votes...but I am not ready to cooperate with AD in its uncontrolled hunting of PN votes.”

“I am not prepared to work in a party and be responsible for the election of another party that wants to separate Malta from the Europe AD believes in so much”.
