Task Force needed to monitor prices – Coleiro Preca

Malta Independent Saturday, 10 May 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 17 years ago

Labour MP Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, who is contesting the post of party leader, yesterday continued her campaign trail with a visit to the Zebbug market.

She called for a task force to continue monitoring the ever-increasing international price of oil and cereals while drawing up a series of measures that will reduce the effects on the Maltese.

Ms Coleiro Preca pointed out the hawkers told her that people are buying less, regardless of the price.

Even though it was positive that the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development was meeting to discuss inflation, it was not enough to ensure that the rising prices will not have a negative effect on the Maltese.

Ms Coleiro Preca also urged the government to strengthen the Office of Fair Trade so that all businessmen will receive a fair profit.

Ms Coleiro Preca yesterday also visited a secondary school students fair organised by the Scoops Cooperatives outside the law courts. She praised the initiatives taken by several secondary school heads in Malta and Gozo to set up Scoops – a very positive initiative which helped create an entrepreneurial culture, fair trade, cooperation and solidarity from a young age.
