Malta Independent Tuesday, 17 June 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Hundreds of parents, relatives and friends attended a series of shows which brought to an end the 2007 / 2008 season at the Malta Drama Centre.

The year was marked by a string of studio productions which reached their climax over the past two weeks as students lined up for shows involving free dance, contemporary dance, musical theatre, theatre of the absurd and flamenco.

Junior students, coached by Tiziana Nasser and Antonella Zammit performed routines based on pop numbers while intermediates explored contemporary dance as well as country music.

Musical theatre, including numbers from Les Miserables, Grease, Chicago, Rent, Oliver, Little Shop of Horros and Chess was the genre involving a group of students who next month will enter their London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) certificate examination. The group is tutored by Tiziana Calleja.

Another group of senior students, directed by Carmel S. Aquilina, presented selections from the theatre of the absurd and the programme included texts by Pinter, Ionesco, Berkoff, Costas Murselas, Dario Fo and Franca Rama.

Flamenco was presented by a troupe of students tutored by Svetlana Silina Floriani who has been preparing a special class for the Aleanza Flamenco examinations in July.

The Malta Drama Centre is accepting new recruits for the year starting in October.

Application forms are available from the centre (telephone: 2122-0665; e-mail: [email protected])
