Football – Bank Of Valletta Division Three: Mdina Knights and Xghajra suffer first defeats

Section A

Xghajra T- Gudja U. 0-2

Gudja played the better football early on and were close after ten minutes through a Roderick Debattista effort which was saved by Roderick Camilleri. Xghajra's reply produced a Lizio Grech free-kick which finished just wide. A Jeffrey Mallia header for Gudja on 16 minutes was cleared off the line by a Xghajra defender.

In the 23rd minute Gudja were awarded a disputed penalty for a foul on Dalzier Zammit with ELVIN GAUCI converting from the spot. Xghajra's Gordon Borg was sent off from the substitute's bench. Xghajra replied in the 36th minute as a strong shot by Alex Azzopardi was blocked by a Gudja defender and 11 minutes into the second-half they were denied by Mark Farrugia off a point-blank effort by Patrick Muscat.

Gudja assured themselves of the three points with a second goal scored by substitute CLAYTON MICALLEF following a good move by Elvin Gauci. A minute from time Xghajra were reduced to ten players when defender Tony Muscat was saved for an ugly foul on a Gudja player.

Mdina Knights -Ghaxaq 0-1

As expected it was leaders Mdina Knights who dictated the proceedings during the first-half and in the opening seven minutes were close through Ayrton Buhagiar and Ian Sammut.

In the 30th minute Mdina missed a sitter through Nicholas Micallef and then the Ghaxaq keeper Jonathan Agius brought off difficult saves to deny Nicholas Micallef and Matthew Francalanza.

Mdina missed another two opportunities through Micallef and Francalanza and they paid heavily for these mistakes as just before the break Ghaxaq scored through a low angled shot by BJORN DALLI in a swift counter-attack.

In the 54th minute Dalli was twice denied by the Mdina keeper with Mdina respondiong in the 64th minute as a header by Steve Azzopardi was somehow stopped by Jonathan Agius. In the 73rd minute Mdina were unlucky when a shot by Nicholas Micallef bounced off the crossbar and late in the match Mdina were again denied by Agius off a close-range header by Adrian Galea.

This was Mdina's first defeat of the season.

Section B

Pembroke A.-Gzira U 1-2

Pembroke were close after just seven minutes through a strong drive by Carlo Leonardi which was saved with difficulty by Gzira's custodian Keith Camilleri.

At the other end Gzira were denied by Debattista off a shot by NICO CORITO but in the 16th minute the same player gave the Maroons the lead with a low shot following an indecision by David Serge.

Pembroke's reaction produced an Anthony Farrugia cross shot which just missed the target with Gzira responding through Nico Corito who hit just wide following a personal effort.

Pembroke had a good second-half and dictated matters for long stretches. They drew level on 52 minutes through a close-range shot by SIMON BUHAGIAR after the Gzira keeper had parried off an attempt by Josef Mansueto but Gzira regained the lead in the 66th minute through NICO CORITO's second goal. Pembroke reacted strongly and were twice very close late in the match through Simon Buhagiar and Brandon Laudi.

Santa Lucia-Siggiewi 3-1

The Saints were close after nine minutes as a point-blank shot by Malcolm Marmara was parried by the Siggiewi custodian Chris Schembri.

However Santa Lucia forged ahead in the 13th minute with ANTHONY BRIGNONE heading in from an Emanuel Cutajar corner-kick and five minutes later Siggiewi were denied by Fulvio Azzopardi off a Pierre Spiteri volley.

In the 27th minute the Saints had a Tano Farrugia shot cleared off the goal line by Jason Camilleri but three minutes later they increased their lead through EMANUEL CUTAJAR following a good move by Malcolm Marmara. Siggiewi reduced the arrears in the 36th minute through PIERRE SPITERI and two minutes later the same player had another goal disallowed for an offside infringement. Siggiewi attacked for long stretches after the change of ends but Santa Lucia were twice close through Emanuel Cutajar and Malcolm Marmara.

The Saints scored their third goal in the 87th minute through substitute LIAM CUTAJAR who was then booked for a second time and sent off.
