Motorcyclist Dies in traffic accident

A 30-year-old motorcyclist from Santa Venera died in a road accident in Zabbar yesterday, the police said.

The man, Keith Harrington, was involved in the accident at about 1pm in Triq Wied il-Ghajn where, the police said, the biker was involved in collision with a van and ended under a car. He died in an ambulance on the way to hospital, the police said.

Duty magistrate Silvio Meli was informed of the case and appointed several experts to assist in an inquiry.

Further police investigations, led by Inspector Jesmond Borg of the Cospicua district, are underway.

This was the second fatal road accident this week. Police Officer Dennis Sammut died after colliding head on with a cement truck at the Gharghur by-pass. His funeral was held in Birkirkara yesterday.

This was also the second serious road accident involving a motorcyclist in a week.

A 32-year-old man from Kirkop was hospitalised on Friday 1 May after crashing into an electricity pole at around 1.30 pm in December 13 Road, Marsa.

He was suffering from grievous injuries however his condition later improved. Police sources said that he was later released from hospital and was recovering at home.
