MCST Science in the community events

Malta Independent Saturday, 19 December 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

The Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST) is running a Science Popularisation Campaign, aiming to encourage people to be more interested and knowledgeable about science and technology through a number of initiatives including: two annual large-scale Science and Technology Festivals, Science in the Community events, a media campaign and a training course in science animation.

After completing the first S&T Festival, MCST has invited all local councils in Malta and Gozo to express their interest in hosting one of six whole-day Science in the Community events. The first event is scheduled for Sunday, 24 January and the remaining five events will be organised at intervals until the end of September 2010.

The main objective of these six events is to engage the local community in a day of activities aimed at popularising science in the form of a mini S&T Festival. Key S&T players from the locality, such as NGOs, government and private entities, associations, clubs and academia, will be brought together to communicate what they provide.

Each of the selected local councils will host one event in collaboration with MCST and a tendered contractor who will provide logistics. MCST is also responsible for putting up an exhibition of portable and interactive science exhibits.

The six participating local councils will be selected by MCST according to a set of criteria. The deadline for expression of interest is Thursday, 7 January. Local councils interested in hosting one of these events may contact the project coordinators by email ([email protected] or [email protected]) or phone on 23602122/138.
