Tristan B In court for fraud… again

Malta Independent Saturday, 19 December 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Emanuel Balzan, 32, who resides in St Paul’s Bay and known as Tristan B was in court again over fraud.

He was accused of defrauding his British neighbour, a woman who lives on her own, out of E4,322 in a week between November and December.

Inspector Maurice Curmi, who prosecuted, said Tristan B used to ask the woman for money for several reasons, including electrical works at his apartment. He explained the accused took advantage of the fact the woman lived alone.

She reported him after he asked for another E1,000 to pay some VAT tax bill.

Lawyer Peter Paul Zammit, who represented him said his client was to return the money by the end of the month.

However, inspector Curmi said he had different information from the alleged victim which gave reason against trusting Tristan B. He said the accused should not be granted bail, at least until the victim testified in court.

Dr Zammit objected on the grounds that the accused, an entertainer, would lose a lot of work at this time of year, and subsequently job contracts. He would also have to pay penalties for not honouring appointments and his financial situation would therefore get worse.

The court, presided over by magistrate Lawrence Quintano, granted him bail on condition he does not communicate with the woman.

A E2,000 deposit and E2,000 personal guarantee were applied.

The court warned Tristan B he would be jailed for six months provided that he breaks one of its conditions.

The singer was arraigned in court in the past over a number of fraud cases including the HSBC bank. Some two years ago, he was accused of defrauding various people out of over E1 million, he was accused of taking money for a music concert which was never held.
