Malta Independent Sunday, 7 February 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Over the last year, the Ghana Mission Foundation has sent over $61,000 to the Maltese Health Centre in Ghana with the aim of sustaining the Institute for World Evangelisation (ICPE) initiative.

The Ghana Mission Foundation was set up in 1999, and since then has helped the ICPE raise funds for the health centre.

The new HopeXchange Medical Centre not only provides high quality clinical services, but also works with the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons and other local international medical institutions to offer postgraduate specialised medical educational courses to healthcare providers.

The Centre houses the first ever interactive Learning Laboratory of the Breast Health Global Initiative, where doctors and scientists from around the world share critical information on the early detection and treatment of breast cancer in Ghana.

Towards the end of last year, Institute and Health Centre founder Mario Cappello had a meeting with the new Ghanaian President, John Atta Mills. The President praised the initiative and its recently built diagnostic and treatment facility, which is focusing on infectious diseases namely malaria and HIV, as well as breast cancer, facial malform-ation and ophthalmology.

The HopeXchange Medical Centre is an 80-bed hospital located in Kumasi. In 1998 it was chosen by the late Pope John Paul II as one of his projects for the millennium. Since then, Maltese and Gozitans have continuously supported the project, which has now become a reality.

In February last year, the Ghana Mission Foundation decided to extend its mission and took on the responsibility of continuing to sustain the project. Following the decision, the Foundation organised two fund-raising campaigns, which raised €79,088. The expenses related to organising the campaigns amounted to €27,386 – including the running of the Foundation’s office. The total sum sent to Ghana since 1999 amounts to $1,369,818.

The Ghana Mission Foundation receives donations throughout the year. Its office is in the Media Centre Complex, National Road, Blata l-Bajda HMR1640. Donations can be forwarded by cheque or money order, addressed to the Foundation. Direct deposits are also accepted in these accounts: BOV: 11206046019 and HSBC: 033-143819-050.

The Financial Reports for previous years, including 2009, will be available for viewing by the public after the first week of March this year. The Foundation’s office is open daily from Monday to Friday between 9am and noon.
