Authorities Fail to pull down wall obstructing a pavement

Malta Independent Monday, 7 June 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The authorities have failed to pull down a boundary wall obstructing a pavement in Pope John Paul II Street in Rabat, Gozo, where an elderly man died after he was hit by a car last January.

Residents who spoke to this newspaper complained that the wall poses a danger because pedestrians have no choice but to get off the pavement and onto the street when they get to the wall, which forms part of a construction site.

It is the exact same place where Salvu Galea, 79, lost his life on 27 January this year, when he was hit by a car at about 6.30am. He had suffered head injuries and died in hospital.

This newspaper has learned that Mr Galea had been walking on the pavement; he did not intend crossing the road, but had to pass between the parked cars and go onto the street to be able to carry on his way.

This is not the first time that residents have complained about the wall, but more than four months after the fatal accident, nothing has been done about it. One resident commented: “Why, why are such atrocities allowed?”
