Malta Independent Wednesday, 9 June 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 15 years ago

A man from Tarxien allegedly attacked his neighbour, a police officer, last Sunday at around 10.20pm. The case was heard by a court presided by Magistrate Miriam Hayman yesterday.

Clayton Azzopardi, 27 pleaded not guilty to relapsing, resisting, assaulting, threatening and slightly injuring police officer Clive Mangion and damaging his personal car.

Mr Azzopardi was also charged with being drunk and disorderly, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, using vulgar language, breaching public order, slightly injuring a pedestrian during the argument, and refusing to cooperate with the police.

In a second arraignment, a friend of the accused, Roderick Muscat, 22, was accused of being an accomplice in the case. He is also accused of breaching the conditions of a previous release.

Sources close to the case said the accused believes that the policeman (his neighbour) had given him a beating.

Lawyer Marion Camilleri is defending the accused. Both were remanded in custody.
