Mosta To commemorate 70th anniversary of the bomb that did not explode

Malta Independent Sunday, 8 April 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Tomorrow marks the 70th anniversary of what is considered one of the greatest miracles of WWII in Malta, when a 200-kilo bomb was dropped on the Mosta Church and penetrated its dome on 9 April 1942 but failed to explode. There were some 300 people gathered in the church at the time attending an early evening Mass.

1942 was the most devastating for Malta during the war and in April of that year more than 6,000 tonnes of bombs were dropped on the island.

A musical-literary evening is being organised for next Sunday, 15 April, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the miraculous event. The evening will also include an interview with one of the Maltese members of the Bomb Disposal Unit, who will give an account provided by Captain Thomas Withworth, the officer who neutralised the bomb on the day, how the bomb’s mechanism was crafted in such a way as to inflict the greatest damage possible.

The event will be held on Sunday, 15 April, in the Mosta parish church and starts at 6.30pm. The general public is welcome to attend.
