The Labour Party returns to government after a 15-year-gap, with Joseph Muscat as Prime Minister.

The first samples taken by party agents have shown that the Labour Party has won the 2013 election. The first indications are that Labour has picked up 55% of the votes, the biggest victory since Independence, if the results are to be confirmed officially.

This would amount to a gap of some 36,000 votes, perhaps even more. The Labour Party would have between seven and nine more MPs in Parliament.

Labour Party agents have burts into loud applause and shouts, banging their fists against the perspex while candidates clapped and hugged each other.

There are scenes of jubilations at the counting hall. 

The Nationalist Party has conceded defeat. Leader Lawrence Gonzi has called PL leader Joseph Muscat to congratulate him for his victory.

PN general secretary Paul Borg Olivier has said on TVM that the PN has accepted defeat. Labour Party president Stefani Zrinzo Azzopardi said that it is a victory for the positive way of doing politics. He thanked all PL volunteers who helped spread out the party message.

He appealed for party supporters to celebrate in peace and respect others. We have passed through a democratic process and we must now show responsibility, as Labour supporyers started chantin "Taghna lkoll" and "Viva l-Labour".

Now that the election victory has been announced, attention turns to who of the party candidates were elected. The results indicate that there could be more than one district in which the Labour Party elects four out of five MPs. Last time round, it only happened in the second district.
