PM should ensure EC brings Barroso, OLAF to order - AD

Malta Independent Tuesday, 11 June 2013, 10:17 Last update: about 11 years ago

Prof. Arnold Cassola, AD spokesperson on EU and International Affairs, said: "Following the announcement of the Malta Police Commissioner that he will not proceed against Dalli because there is no criminal offence, the spokesperson of the European Commission today continued to reaffirm that this does not make any difference to Barroso and the Commission since for them John Dalli's position remains always politically untenable."
"In view of the fact that Mr Barroso is ignoring the decision of the Malta Police Commissioner as if it did not even exist, Alternattiva Demokratika - The Green Party demands that Prime Minister Joseph Muscat takes immediate steps with the EU Commission Presidency to verify why the findings of the Malta Police Commissioner are being completely ignored by them".
Carmel Cacopardo AD Acting Chairman stated that on behalf of Alternattiva Demokratika he had brought the matter of the OLAF investigation into Dalligate and the behaviour of OLAF Chief Giovanni Kessler during the Core Group meeting of MEUSAC (Malta-EU Steering and Action Committee) on May 31st 2013 which meeting was addressed by the Prime Minister on the forthcoming meeting of the European Council. To AD’s statement that the Prime Minister should request that the European Council calls Jose’ Manuel Barroso to order and give account of his (Barroso) and OLAF’s actions Dr Muscat had stated that the Maltese Government was awaiting the conclusion of the investigations of the Malta Police prior to deciding on its future actions.
Cacopardo added that in view of the fact the the Commissioner of Police in Malta has now concluded that there is no justification for any criminal action against John Dalli it would now be appropriate for the Prime Minister to act by ensuring that the European Council brings Jose’ Manuel Barroso and OLAF to order.
