Maltese swimmers win 12 gold, four silver and five bronze medals

Maltese swimmers have grabbed 12 gold medals after the first two days of competition at this year’s edition in Kecskemet in Hungary.

They also obtained four silver and five bronze medals in their impressive haul.

 The gold medals were won by Amy Micallef in the 200m breaststroke, Julian Harding in the 100m butterfly and 50m breaststroke, Neil Muscat in the 100m backstroke, Raoul Stafrace in the 50m freestyle and Pia Grech in the 50m breaststroke, Neil Muscat in the 200m backstroke and 50m backstroke, Raoul Stafrace in the 100m freestyle, Pia Grech in the 100m breaststroke, Julian Harding in the 100m breaststroke and 50m butterfly, and the men’s relay team (4 x 100 medley) consisting of Neil Muscat, Julian Harding, Matthew Galea and Raoul Stafrace.

The silver medals were won by Matthew Galea in the 200m freestyle, Raoul Stafrace in the 50m breaststroke, the 4 x 200m freestyle relay men’s team composed of Matthew Galea, Julian Harding, Jordan Calleja and Neil Muscat, and Amy Micallef in the 100m breaststroke.

The bronze medals were landed by Jordan Calleja in the 200m freestyle, Matthew Galea in the 50m freestyle, Jordan Calleja in the 400m freestyle, Charisse Ceccarelli in the 200m butterfly and Gabriel Dimech in the 200m butterfly.

In other events, the girls relay team, consisting of Martina Spiteri Bailey, Laura Demicoli, Pia Grech and Amy Micallef, finished sixth while Michael Stafrace was 11th in the 200m breaststroke.

In the 100m butterfly, Charisse Ceccarelli finished eighth, Gabriel Dimech was seventh in the 100m butterfly, Neil Muscat 4th in the 50m freestyle, Gabriel Dimech was eighth in the same event and Amy Micallef fourth in the 50m breaststroke.

There were also good results in athletics.

Eric Borg Saywell qualified for the semifinals in the 100m but was then eliminated. He also qualified for the 200m semifinal.

Nicole Gatt and Janet Richards also qualified for the semifinals in the 200m and 400m. Gatt, however, failed to qualify for the 100m semifinals.

Kurt Dalli finished 11th in the 1,500m.
