Naturists demand ‘legal spot’ for themselves

Malta Independent Monday, 30 September 2013, 07:56 Last update: about 11 years ago

The naturists’ community is urging both PL and PN to work together without any political scope and act according to what’s right and not fear change, giving naturists a legal spot where they can practice non-sexual naturism. The negativity about the subject in Malta is only due to a lack of information on the subject, the group said in a statement.

“Many of us had hoped that with a new government sworn in last March things will change in favour of our cause. The Labour party had an election campaign based on ‘rights to minorities’, ‘Malta for everyone’, ‘church and state must be different’ and so on.  We now understand that with the ‘rights to minorities’ slogan, PL only meant rights to LGBT!”, the group said.

Rather than moving forward we are witnessing more police raids on our unofficial beaches. Apart from the usual raids via dinghies, police are now conducting surveillance through binoculars from cliffs. The number of police 'raids' have lately increased.

The group said that it had written to Civil Liberties Minister Helena Dalli on the situation, but have yet to receive a reply.

“To add insult to injury the government was quick to assign five beaches as ‘dog friendly’ and this is when we European and other international naturists have no beaches in Malta assigned for our use! Malta is the only country in the EU that continues to deny naturists the right to practice their beliefs,” the group said.

It is true that some perverts and others who exhibited unwanted behaviour frequent our unofficial beaches. We believe that this behaviour that often attracts the police through reports from the public happens largely due that these beaches are not legal. With legality comes more monitoring and any unwanted behaviour will be reported appropriately, the group said.
