Nationalist MP questions dome CCTV cameras in Valletta

Nationalist MP Jason Azzopardi is questioning the installation of two dome CCTV cameras in St George’s Square in Valletta, saying that it is clear that the government is acting like “big brother”.

Writing on Facebook, Dr Azzopardi said that “the government wants to know your movements”, adding that it is clear that the intention is to see the faces of those who are protesting.

St George’s Square is a popular place for protests, the last one being the one held by the MZPN about the citizenship scheme.

Dr Azzopardi said that two CCTV cameras already existed in the area; these were installed as a deterrent against vandalism. But the new two cameras have been installed at a height of a traffic sign and make it clear that they are focussed on people.

The dome CCTV cameras, installed by Transport Malta, have a 360 degree view unlike the first two cameras, Dr Azzopardi said when contacted. He said that the intention is to “instil fear” among those who are protesting, knowing that their faces are being picked up by the cameras.
