PM ‘did not know’ Senglea woman was ‘a distant relative’

Malta Independent Wednesday, 23 April 2014, 12:52 Last update: about 11 years ago

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat admitted this afternoon that a household he visited yesterday in Senglea belongs to “a distant relative” but denied knowing about it beforehand.

Earlier, the PN accused Dr Muscat of visiting a family member - the PN said it was his cousin - and trying to pass it off as another campaign visit.

Questioned by journalists after launching the Youth Guarantee, Dr Muscat said that one of his cousins is a priest, one has two young children, another is a bachelor and two others have ten-year old children.

Visibly uncomfortable, the Prime Minister said that after the visit he discovered that a relative from the woman’s grandmother’s side, who was from Gozo, was distantly related to his father.

When asked why the family name was changed from Buhagiar to Bartolo in the press call and the press release, Dr Muscat said that that might have been a genuine mistake. “I can assure you that I had met the old lady once before but she is certainly not my cousin."
