Syrian jailed for stealing

A 44-year old man from Syria, Samer Mohammed, was jailed for a year after pleading guilty to stealing from a Valletta kiosk. Prosecuting Inspector Kylie Borg informed the court that Mohammed is known with the police as he has previous convictions relating to theft.

She also said that the man has problems related to alcohol. “The accused, who resides at the Marsa Open Centre turns to stealing to fuel his habit,” the prosecution said.

On 13 February, at around 5:40pm, the accused stole an amount of cash from a Valletta sop belonging to Anthony Camilleri. Last Monday, at around 8pm, Mohammed stole sweets from the Fontana Kiosk also in Valletta. He was charged with simple theft, aggravated theft, committing an offence during the term of a suspended sentence and relapsing.

The Syrian man admitted to all charges.

Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit, noted Mohammed’s previous convictions and his admission of guilt and imprisoned the accused for a year. Legal aid lawyer Mark Mifsud Cutajar appeared for the accused.
